Services held for Rose Shimek
Funeral services for Rose Shimek were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 28 at the Notre Dame Parish-Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Kenneth Gehling concelebrating with Rev. John Moser. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Her children placed the pall. Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Joe J. Joerger, Mary Pat Shimek, Gerry Shimek, Janis Steen, Jillaine Kappes, and Jerry Gehling. Conway Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Rose, 99, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at the Cresco Care Center where she has made her home since 1995.
Rose Shimek was born March 20, 1903 in Howard County, the daughter of John F. and Anna (Zajicek) Vorda. She was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She attended rural schools in Howard and Winneshiek County. She was employed in the Strother Hotel in Cresco.
On June 21, 1921 she was married to Joseph Shimek by the Rev. Rudolf Lakomy in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin. They farmed on various farms, eventually farmed on the farm between Schley and Lourdes, they retired in 1970 and moved into Cresco in 1971.
She had been a 4-H leader, was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society and held many of its offices. She was an honorary member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the ladies club “Evening in Paris”.
She liked to garden, sew, bake and making quilts.
She is survived by two daughters: Loretta Joerger of Las Vegas, NV and Marian Gehling of Albert Lea, MN; two sons: Cletus of Charles City and Kenneth of Cresco; 31 grandchildren; 47 greatgrandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and one sister: Ann Lukes of Hoquim, WA.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband Joseph on January 3, 1977; one daughter: Lorraine Pesek; one son: Clarence; one great- grandson; her parents; one brother: James; and three sisters: Mae Nibaur, Agnes Wiest, and Celia Shimek.
