Transcribed by Joy MooreNEW HAMPTON - Doris O'Donnell, 91, New Hampton died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Covenant Meaical Center, Waterloo of natural causes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass. Granddaughters Debra O'Donnell, Melissa Long, Margo Bodensteiner, Heather Curley and Whitney O'Donnell will place the pall on the casket. Lector for the service will be Tyler O'Donnell. The offertory gifts will be presented by Shaylea Curley and Spencer Bodensteiner.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Brett O'Donnell, Tyler O'Donnell, Jason O'Donnell, Gerald Wilson, Wayne Sovereign and Jim Bodensteiner as pallbearers.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Monday, April 22 where there was a 4 p.m. combined Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the America's Rosary, a 7 p.m. Scripture Service and a 7:30 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute. Further visitation will be an hour prior to the funeral at the churcn.
Doris was born Jan. 14, 1911 on a farm in New Oregon Township, Howard County, the daughter of Warren and Florence (River) Sovereign. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1928 with a Normal Training Teachers Certificate. She taught in the local area school the next eight years for grades one through eight. In 1936 she bought and operated a bakery in Cresco for two years. She then ran the Howard County Treasurer's office from 1938 until her marriage to George (Norbert) O'Donnell on March 5, 1943. From 1962 to 1975 the couple owned and operated the "Cue Club" in New Hampton, an entertainment center to accommodate young people.
Survivors include five sons, Joseph (Janice) O'Donnell, Ashland, OR, Jerry (Oletha) O'Donnell, Waterloo, D.J. (Connie) O'Donnell, Lebanon, TN, Mark O'Donnell, Edmond, OK and Jim (Sally) O'Donnell, Rock Island, IL; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and an adopted sister (cousin), Dorothy Fend, Cresco.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, George; three brothers, Claude, Gerald and Clark Sovereign and one sister, Gladys Wilson.
