Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church, LeRoy, for Ethel Mahoney, with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating with burial in the LeRoy Cemetery.
Ethel M. Mahoney was a resident of the Grand Meadow Health Care Center for approximately seven years and was formerly of LeRoy, passed away early Saturday, April 6 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Mahoney was born March 5, 1910 in Oakdale Township Howard County, Iowa to John and Minnie Jones. She attended country schools in Oakdale Township. After completing the eighth grade, she attended and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1927. On October 10,1936, she was united in marriage to Dan F. “Twig” Mahoney at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
The town of LeRoy was always their home and even though good opportunities came to them to go elsewhere, they never regretted their decision to stay in LeRoy.
Mahoney was a telephone operator for the Iowa Union Company in LeRoy from 1929 until her marriage in 1936. In 1954, she again worked at the switchboard until February 1956, when the telephones were changed to dial.
She enjoyed working at eating places in LeRoy; and especially enjoyed working summers at the former Oakdale Amusement Park; seeing the park develop into what it became, and seeing its demise a few years later.
Mahoney was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy and taught Sunday School for many years, and always enjoyed the women’s work in the church.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed her family as is the last of her immediate family to pass away.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1977, two brothers, Martin who was killed in World War II and Donald J. Jones and a sister, Mary Fister.
