ELMA -- Esther Marie Hartogh, 93, Elma, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 a t Colonial Manor, Elma of natural causes.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Immaculate Conception Church, Elma with Reverend John Hemann officiating. Barbara Boyle was the organist and accompanied the Immaculate Conception Church Choir, as well as the soloist, Leon Hartogh, singing "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman", "Prayer of St. Francis", "Lead Me Lord" and "On Eagle's Wings". The lectors for the service were
Jenna Zoz and Kenneth Lamerson. Gift bearers were Paul, Bill and Reynold Mueller. Esther's children placed the pall.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Riceville with Mike Thome, John Hartogh, Mark Lamerson; Mike Manning, Dave Manning and Joe Manning serving as casket bearers.
Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, Elma, where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service.
Esther Marie Hartogh was born Feb. 23, 1909 in Meyer, the daughter of Nicholas John and Rachael (Gorgen) Mueller. She received her schooling in Meyer. On Oct. 6, 1931 she was united in marriage to J. Michael Hartogh in Meyer. Following their marriage the couple farmed in the Mitchell County area until retiring in 1974 and moving to Elma. Esther was a 4-H leader for 25 years and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Elma and an active Rosary Society member. She enjoyed 4-H projects, gardening, canning, sewing and refinishing furniture.
Survivors include six children, Janet (Jerry) Manning, LeMars, Arlene (Joseph) Thome, Waterloo, Leon (Mary) Hartogh, Sauk Village, IL, Frances (Jerry) Lamerson, White Lake, MI, Bernard Hartogh, Elkhart, IN, Kenneth (Sue) Hartogh, Bristol, IN; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; four brothers, Arnold Mueller, Sheldon, Paul Mueller, Highland Park, IL, Bill Mueller, Prescott Valley, AZ and Reynold Mueller, Des Moines; a sister, Martha Duebner, Arlington Heights, IL and two sisters-in- law, Mary Koenigs, Pontiac, MI and Louise Mueller, Dallas, TX.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, J. Michael; three brothers, Francis, Raymond and Carl; two sisters, Rose Durben and Agnes Bees
