Services held for Verne Gager, 78
Funeral services For Verne Gager were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Rick Kielb officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
Verne, 78, died Friday, March 15 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he has made his home for the last 28 years.
Verne Osmer Gager was born May 4, 1923 at Cresco, the son of Herbert Leslie and Margaret (Kaufman) Gager. He graduated from Cresco High School and started working. He enlisted in the Army on January 15, 1943. He served in the South Pacific. Following his discharge on April 18, 1946, he returned to Iowa and started working for a photo studio in Charles City. Again he enlisted in the Army to serve during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to Cresco and worked at various jobs. He was a cook, a bartender, and worked at a gas station.
Verne lived with his mother until she died in 1973 and in January of 1974 he entered the Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
He is survived by three sisters: Ellen Stevens of Cresco, Jennie Hagen of Des Moines, and Carol Casey of Lime Springs.
Verne was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Donald and Walter; and four sisters: Evelyn Swim, Thelma Rotte, Edna Sears, and Marian Gager in infancy
