Paul G. Gaffey died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the Riceville Community Rest Home following a long illness.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville with inurnment in Calvary Cemetery at Elma, Iowa. Pastor Michael Carey will preside. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday.
Paul Glendon Gaffey was born in Jenkins Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, on July 22, 1922, the son of John J. and Mary (Morrissey) Gaffey. He attended the stone school and school in Riceville, graduating from Riceville High School in 1940. He was a State of Iowa Scholar, but preferred to return home and farm with his older brothers.
In 1943, he entered the Army Air Force. He served as an aerial gunner with the 456th Bombardment Group from October of 1943 until March of 1945, operating a machine gun in the airplane to protect the bomber from enemy attack over Europe and North Africa. During this time, he was united in marriage to Roberta Cox at chapel #36 at Buckley Field, Col. He was discharged in February of 1946, receiving a Bronze Star and .good Conduct Medal and he and Roberta returned to the Riceville area.
Paul was proud of being Irish, he liked to read, repair old machinery and help others. He served on the township board, served as president of the Stone School Board, and his picture was even on a recruiting poster for the U.S. Army. He also liked to play cards.
He is survived by four sons, Michael of Grand Forks, N.D., Dennis (Deb) of Kennewick, Wash., Mark (Donna), and Brian, both of Riceville, Iowa; four daughters, Paula (Larry) Dinger of the Federated States of Microriesia, Maureen Gaffey and Theresa Gaffey (Herve Evans), both of St. Paul, Minn., and Karen (Ernest) Schofield of Riceville; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Beery of Riceville, and Irene Hemrich of Grundy Center, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta on May 7, 2002; one son, Thomas; one grandson, Sean Gaffey; four brothers, John, James, Arthur, and Eugene; three sisters, Kathleen Gaffey, Margaret Brown and Lucille Adams.
