Transcribed by Joy MooreLAWLER -- Raymond J. (Buster) Flatjord, 65, rural Lawler, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002 at his home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral Services were 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lawler with Rev. Peter D. Peterson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Lindsay Zeien as organist and Rod Meyer as vocalist. Hymn selections included "Battle Hymn Of The Republic", "Softly and Tenderly" and "Hymn Of Promise".
Burial was in the church cemetery with Kim Flatjord, Bruce Flatjord, Eric Flatjord, David Flatjord, Eric Kulju and Scott Simmons as pallbearers. Military rites were conducted by the Alta Vista Paul johann American Legion Post #4069. Honorary pallbearers were Lawrence Ondrashek, Harvey Knutson, Lee Kintz, Tiny Dowd, Ronnie Dostal, Chuck Vikdal, Bob Webster and Ron Maher.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 at Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton where there was a 7 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute. Visitation was also one hour prior to services at the church.
Raymond was born Sept. 8, 1936 on his parent's farm north of Jerico in rural Howard County, the son of Olaf and Hannah (Amble) Flatjord. He attended rural country school through eighth grade and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1955. On Feb. 8, 1956 he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a Private First Class. He was united in marriage to Emma Jean Pelton on July 20, 1957. The couple initially lived in Oakland, CA for six months until Ray was honorably discharged from the service on Feb. 7, 1958. Ray and Emma Jean then moved to their current farm east of Jerico. Ray worked at Farmers Mill, Protivin before working for Land O Lakes for over 20 years. He also enjoyed working at The Mint in Protivin and for the last four years worked at the Howard County Residential Care Facility. Ray loved "driving" his horse and following the many sporting events that his grandchildren were involved in.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Jean; five daughters, Julie (Frank) Britt, Tuscaloosa, AL, Lori (Kevin) Hirsch, Alpha, Becky (Don) Davision, White Heath, IL, Terri (Mike) Jirak, Little Turkey and Aimee (Don) Rosenbaum, Little Turkey; 13 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Neal (Lorraine) Flatjord, Jerico and Harold (Beulah), Hiawatha; one sister, Bernis (Ken) Geving, McGregor, MN; an aunt, Frieda Prescott, Adams, MN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one granddaughter, Cora Marie Bell, in 1986.
