Transcribed by Joy MooreLOURDES - Marlene A. Chihak, 61, Lourdes, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton of natural causes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Lourdes with Reverend John Hemann presiding. Theresa Burke will be the organist and accompany the Our Lady of Lourdes Church Choir singing "On Eagle's Wings", "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace" and "Be Not Afraid". Barb Ollendieck, Jean Schlatter, Teresa Chihak, Taylor Schlatter and Kim White will present the offertory gifts. Bill Chihak will be the lector. Mass servers will be Scott Valvoda and Logan Ptacek. Marlene's husband and children will place the pall.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with Donald Chihak, Allan Chihak, Ronald Valvoda, Troy Meyer, Lewis Meyer, Jr., and Donald Ludwig serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Craig Schlatter, Shawn Ollendieck, Scott Stevenson, Lewis Meyer, Ray Valvoda and Robert Chihak.
Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 a t Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, Elma where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.
Marlene Ann Chihak was born Oct. 31, 1940 in Eldorado, the daughter of Truman and Georgia (Woodson). Meyer. She graduated from North High, West Union in 1958. She was united in marriage to Joseph Chihak on Sept. 20, 1960 at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union. Following their marriage the couple moved to a farm near Lourdes where they resided ever since. Throughout the years she worked at various places in Charles City, New Hampton and Elma. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Rosary Society. She enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, collecting owls and being with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph; three sons, Tim Chihak, Cresco, Tom Chihak and Todd Chihak, both of Lourdes; three daughters, Jean (Craig) Schlatter, Winterset, Barb (Shawn) Ollendieck, Davenport and Teresa and her fiance, Scott Stevenson, Elma; a granddaughter; a brother, Lewis Meyer, Spillville and a sister, Carol DeVoe, Virginia Beach, VA.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Mike Meyer and a sister, Dawn VanScayoc.
