Memorial services for Charles Welch were held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18, at the Evans Memorial Home Chapel in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Charles, 80, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where he had been a resident since May 5, 2001.
Charles William Welch was born July 12, 1920 in Des Moines, the son of Edwin and Helen (Gooch) Welch. He attended school in Des Moines graduating from North High School in 1938.
On August 16, 1941 he married JoAnn West in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 until 1946. In 1954 he joined the Des Moines Police Department attaining the rank of detective, retiring in 1969.
Following his retirement, he moved to Alabama. They then moved to Florida where JoAnn died, and following her death, he moved to Cresco to be near his daughter.
Charles enjoyed fishing and playing golf.
He is survived by his children: Carolyn “Charlie” Reeves of Cresco, Glenn of Opelika, AL, and Creszenz Hamand of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Edwin of California and Jack of Texas.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn in 1995; an infant daughter; his parents; one brother: Robin; and one sister: Carol Welch.
