Transcribed by Joy MooreELMA — Orrie Thompson, 92, Elma, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001 at his home of complications of cancer.
A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at the United Methodist Church in Elma with Rev. Cathy Luck officiating. Curtis W. Rainy was organist.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Honorary pall bearers were Al Culbert, Ken Carr, Bill Cole, Vic Johnson, Jack Johnson and Joe Ludwig.
The family greeted friends an hour prior to services at the church. Conway Funeral Home, Elma, was in charge of arrangements.
Orrie Eddy Thompson was born July 3, 1909 at Greene, the son of Eddy Drake and Mary Ann (Newbern) Thompson. He attended Greene Public School. After his schooling, Orrie spent time jumping trains and going out west to follow the fall harvest. On Nov. 27, 1935 he was united in marriage with Geraldine Louise Spurbeck at Independence. Following their marriage the couple resided in Greene, where he worked at Gambles and later had his own electrical business, then worked for Interstate Power Company. Orrie entered the U.S. Navy in October of 1943 and was a Chief Electricians Mate and Chief Petty Officer, serving in the Aluetian Islands from October of 1943 until December of 1945. Upon his return from the service, Orrie owned a radio repair shop, Thompson Radio & TV in Greene. He went back to work for Interstate Power Company and later moved to Riceville where the couple lived for one year. In 1953 they moved to Elma where he was Area Manager for Interstate Power Company until his retirement in 1973. Orrie was an Amateur Radio Operator W0DFC. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed playing pool.
Surviving are five daughters, Kay (John; Hayden, Elma, Connie , (Don) Burzette, Stewartville, MN, Kathy (Dave) Tempus, Nora Springs, Corinne Sivertsen, Cedar Rapids, Mary (Larry) Thompson Williams, Rochester, MN; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Geraldine; his parents; three brothers; three sisters.
