Transcribed by Joy MooreNEW HAMPTON -- Paul M. Shannon, 77, New Hampton, died Thursday, Mav 17, 2001 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 21 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass. Music for the service was provided by Ann Bennett as organist and the St. Mary's Choir. Lectors for the service were Jackie Shannon and Cindy Northrup.
Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton with Nathan Northrup, Ryan Shannon, Jon Shannon, Brad Northrup, Jeff Ulrichs, Vonnie Shannon, Cindy Shannon and Jean Shannon as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Curt Huffman, Steve Adams, Joe Sheehy, Benj Kramer, Harlan Pose and Leon Hugeback.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, May 20 at Larkin -Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton where there was a 4p.m. rosary, a 7 p.m. scripture service and a 7:30 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute.
Paul was born in Elma on July 29, 1923, the son of George L. and Clara (Elgas) Shannon. He attended the Immaculate Conception Grade and High School, Elma, graduating in 1941. On Nov. 10, 1947 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, St. Cecelia, he married Frances Riley. Following their marriage, they lived in Elma for ten years where Paul managed the Shannon Quarry for his father, as well as being the owner-operator of Shannon Conoco Oil Co., Elma. He was the mayor, on the fire department and was a police officer in Elma. They moved to New Hampton in 1957 where Paul worked as a crane operator for Stolz Construction for many years and then went to work in maintenance for the Farmers Coop, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Paul enjoyed golfing, woodworking and was known for his ability to fix, construct or invent many things.
Survivors include his wife, Fran; three sons, Tom (Cindy), Rochester, MN, Terry (Vonnie), New Hampton and Steve (Jean), Charles City; one daughter, Maureen (Brad) Northrup, Hastings, MN; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Lee (Marian) Shannon, Elma; two sisters, Jean Shannon, New Hampton and Marge (Gerald) Cansen, Elma and a brother-in- law, Bob Boos, New Hampton.
Preceding h im in death were his parents; one sister, Rita Boos and one brother, Jerry Shannon.
