Funeral services for Ralph Ries of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma with Rev. John Hemann officiating. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in North Washington. Ralph’s wife and children placed the pall. Pallbearers were: Jeff Laures, Brian Laures, Doug Laures, Bob Schaudenecker, Kevin Ries, Mark Ries, Kent Ries, and Patrick L. Ries. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters: Emily C. Ries, Julie Gebel, Lori Marsh, Mary Jo Urbatsch, Kelli Zimmerman, Janae Wilson, Deb Ries, Nicole A. McCurdy, and Jessica J. Mathews as well as the Elma Knights of Columbus Council #4144 and Catholic Order of Foresters St. Benedict Court #1245 of North Washington. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ralph, 84, died Monday, December 3, 2001 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City of natural causes.
Ralph M. Ries was born March 6, 1917 near North Washington, the son of Ed and Anna (Nosbisch) Ries. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in North Washington. After his schooling he farmed with his family on the family farm.
On November 26, 1940 he married Mary Schwickerath at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. After their marriage the couple fanned in Chickasaw County for seven years. In 1947 the couple purchased a farm in Howard County. The couple moved to Elma in 1975 and he continued farming until his retirement in 1980. Ralph enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, fishing, traveling, and playing cards.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, Elma Knights of Columbus Council #4144, 4th degree Knights of Columbus (Davis Assembly), and the Catholic Order of Foresters St. Benedict Court #1245 of North Washington.
He is survived by his wife Mary; two daughters: Elaine Laures of Osage and Marilyn Schaudenecker of Alta Vista; four sons: John of Elma, Gary L. of Elma. Ed R. of Spring Valley, MN, and Mike L. of Cresco; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-graridchildren.
Ralph was preceded in death by two daughters: Janice and Mary Ann in infancy; his parents; four brothers: his twin Raymond, Harold, Leonard, and Cletus in infancy.
