Virgil Raymond Rice, 83, dies
Services were held Monday, July 2 at the United Methodist Church, Lime Springs, for Virgil Raymond Rice, 83, who died Thursday, June 28 at the Cresco Hospital.
The Rev. Margaret Asabea officiated at the 2 p.m. services. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs.
He was born July 21, 1917 at Clear Lake, Iowa and attended school in Clear Lake graduating in 1935. He married Agnes Polsdofer at Swaledale, Iowa Oct. 15, 1939.
They farmed at Clear Lake five years and Rockwell 10 years before moving to Lime Springs. He was initially a farmer, but also a salesman and originator of the SMI Pallet Plant, which he owned and managed for 25 years.
He was a 4-H leader for 25 years and served as chairman of the leaders in Cerro Gordo County. He was co-chairman of the Howard County Republican Party for 13 years. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Lime Springs.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes, and five children, Linda (Brittain) Lukens, Versailles, Indiana; Donna (Larry) Bonnstetter, West Bend, Iowa; Clair (Carol) Rice, Verndale, Minn.; Dennis (Velma) Rice, Lime Springs, and Betty (Dennis) VandeLaare, Mendota Heights, Minn.
Also 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; some step-grandchildren; a brother, Carrol Rice, Swaledale, and sisters, Geneva Felton, Portland, Oregon and Edith Edson, Berkeley, Calif. Also a host of friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth, Paul, Clifford and Harold.
