Services held for Wesley Opat, 72
Funeral services for Wesley Opat were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Rev. John W. Heman officiating. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Pallbearers were all his grandchildren: Leslie Opat Jr., Christopher Opat, Phillip Opat, Anita Opat, Melissa Opat, Jason Opat, Michael Opat, Steven Opat, Kristin Opat, Elissa Wiger, Amanda Wiger, John Paul Morken, and Katie Morken. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Wesley, 72, died Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Wesley John Opat was born October 13, 1929 near Lourdes in Howard County, the son of John and Elsie (Kubicek) Opat. He was baptized and confirmed at Our lady{sic} of Lourdes Catholic church and attended school at Lourdes. Following his schooling, he returned to the farm to help with the daily chores. He was a lifelong resident of, Howard County, farming near Lourdes and then near Lime Springs. He moved into Cresco earlier this year.
On June 29, 1951 he married Dolores Ludwig at Lourdes, They were later divorced.
Wesley was a member of the Howard County Farm Bureau having served as its president at one time. He was a lifelong member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council at Elma.
He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
He is survived by five children: Leslie of Lime Springs, Matthew of Chatfield, MN, Elizabeth Wiger of Decorah, John of Rochester, MN, and Joel of Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Irene Bartels of Riceville, Alice Stevenson, and Evelyn Flugge, all of Elma.
Wesley was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held on Saturday, November 24, 2001 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial in the Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes, Iowa. Rev. John Hemann officiated the services.
Wesley Opat, age 72, died Tuesday, November 20 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.
He was born in Lourdes in Howard County, Iowa on October 13, 1929, the son of John and Elsie (Kubicek) Opat. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and attended school at Lourdes. Following his schooling, he returned to the farm to help with daily chores. He was a lifelong resident of Howard County, Iowa farming near Lourdes and then near Lime Springs. He moved into Chester earlier this year. On June 29, 1951, he was united in marriage to Delores Ludwig at Lourdes. They were later divorced.
Wesley enjoyed his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the Howard County Farm Bureau having served as its President at one time. He was a lifelong member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council at Elma, Iowa.
Wesley is survived by his five children: Leslie (Mary) of Lime Springs, IA, Matthew (Therese) of Chatfield, MN, Elizabeth (Clark) Wiger of Decorah, I A, John (Peggi) of Rochester, MN and Joel of Clear Lake, I A; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters: Irene (Clarence) Bartels of Riceville, IA, Alice (Charles) Stevenson and Evelyn (Albert) Flugge, all of Elma, IA
He was preceded in death by his parents.
