Services held for Margaret Opat
Funeral services" for Margaret Opat were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 1 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiated. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Margaret, 92, died Saturday, February 24, 2001 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.
Margaret Josephine Opat was born February 22, 1909 in Howard County, near Protivin, the daughter of John and Veronica (Samec) Polansky. She attended school in the Howard County area.
On November 22, 1927 she married Wesley Zobeck at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They established their home on a farm near Protivin, then moved to the Lourdes area. Wesley died on March 27, 1961. Margaret did some cooking in a cafe in Elma for her sister-in-law and brother-in- law.
On May 18, 1963 she married Joseph F. Opat. They moved back on the farm near Schley, and Margaret lived there until she moved into the Cresco Care Center nine years ago.
Survivors include one son: Joseph Zobeck of Bonaparte; two daughters: Evelyn Murray and Gladys Novak both of Charles City; one step- daughter: Evelyn Lindquist; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother: August Polansky of Kewanee, IL.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband’s, Wesley and Joseph; one step son: Raphael Opat; one grandchild; her parents; seven brothers: Albert, Alois, John, Edward, James, Joseph and Vincent; and five sisters: Agnes Pontenberg, Beatrice Lipa, Mary Hruska, Veronica Smith and Magdalena Polansky.
