Services held for Clarence Montague
Funeral services for Clarence Montague of Cresco were held on Wednesday, January 10 at the St. Joseph’s Worship Center with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated with the assistance of Sr. Mary Hargrafen. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clarence, 94, died Monday, January 8, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
Clarence Joseph Montague was born September 23, 1906 at Lourdes. As a young boy, Clarence and his mother moved into Cresco and he graduated from Cresco High School in 1925 and spent two years at Bayless Business College in Dubuque.
On June 15, 1937 he married Evelyn Polashek at St. Joseph’s Church in Cresco. Before his marriage he played the trumpet for numerous bands.
Clarence farmed as a young man. He worked in Kalishek Hardware for 15 years, was co-owner of Red Owl with Bill Polashek for 15 years, owned a grocery called Zip’s Market, he was a county Conservation Officer for five years. During this time he helped survey the area for lake Hendricks and planted many thousands of pine trees throughout the county. He co-owned Puritan Candy Company with John Chvatal. After retirement he sold monuments for Winona Monument Company.
Clarence was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to fish, work in his workshop building birdhouses and one piece fans, gardening, and being outdoors. He enjoyed people and telling stories.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn; three sons: James of Lake Elmo, MN, Paul of Middleton, WI, and Mark of Wheaton, IL; one daughter: Mary Ann Valdez of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Arthur.
