Services were held Monday, Jan. 29, for a Cresco businessman who served on the city council and in recent years has been the transportation director for the Howard-Winneshiek School District.
Robert "Bob" Ollendieck, 61, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in his home following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Up until last November 30, 2000, Bob had been the transportation director for the Howard-Winneshiek School District, a position he had held since 1988.
In November 1977, Bob was elected to the Cresco city council, a position he held for 11-1/2 years. During that span, he was involved in decisions concerning major street improvements which included the downtown renovation project, waste water treatment plant expansion, construction of a new fire station, the acceptance by the city of the Cresco Opera House, and expansion of the city’s water system.
Born on April 20, 1939 in Cresco to Bernard C and Irma M (Fritz) Ollendieck, Bob attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Cresco Notre Dame High School in 1957. On Feb. 18, 1958 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1960.
Upon leaving the service, he initially worked for the Farmers Coop Creamery in Cresco until Aug. 17, 1964 when he went into partnership with his brother to form Bob & Chuck's Farm Service, a partnership that continued for nearly 19 years. In 1983 Bob was hired as the superintendent of Rawhide Trailers of Cresco and from 1984 until 1988 he was manager of Soma Corp. of Cresco, which led up to his 1988 hiring as the transportation director for the school district.
He served as president of the Oak Lawn Cemetery board until the time of his death and was in partnership with his son, Phillip, in Phil's Lawn Service from 1986 to the present. From 1976 to 1983 he also farmed.
He has been a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco.
On Oct. 21, 1961 Bob was united in marriage to Dulcie Grube.
He is survived by his wife, Dulcie, who is the manager of Cresco radio station KCZQ-FM; sons Paul of Tripoli and Philip of Cresco; daughter Pamela of Orange City; three grandchildren; five brothers: Donald, Richard and Dean all of Cresco, Charles of Palm Harbor, FL, and Kenneth of Buckingham, IA; five sisters: Dorris Ferrie, Marion Ollendieck and Jean McCarville all of Cresco; Joyce Sweeney of Waterloo; and Judy Tucker of Holden, MO.
He was preceded in death by a son, Peter, and his parents.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with burial with military honors held in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar and the Rev. Lewis Flanigan presided. Conway Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
It is requested that memorials be directed to the family, which plans to establish a scholarship in the name of Robert Ollendieck.
