Services held for Elfriede Melver
Funeral services for Elfriede Melver were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Conway Funeral Home. Tim Jones and Rev. Randy Kruse officiated. Interment will be at a later date in New Oregon Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Bill Cain, David Rasmussen, Jason Jones, Melanie Kimber, Stepanie Cain and Doug Rasmussen.
Elfriede, 74, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg where she had been a resident since March 8.
Ruth Elfriede Melver was born July 16, 1926 at Heidenheim, Germany, the daughter of Klaus and Bertha (Schramm) Henle. She attended elementary and gymnasium school in her hometown. Following her education, she was employed as a telephone operator in Germany.
She met Clarence Donald Melver while he was stationed in Germany right after WWII and she came to Cresco and they were married on January 1, 1949. Following their marriage, she worked for Tex Brewer candleing eggs. In about 1959, they moved to Cedar Rapids where she worked for a short time for Rockwell Collins. She volunteered at St. Lukes Hospital, and volunteered for different theatre and dance groups. She attended the Baptist Church in Marion.
She retained her membership in the Cresco V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Survivors include three daughters: Gloria May of Stanwood, Donna Probasco of Isle, MN, and Susan Jones of Williamsburg; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Elfriede was preceded in death by her husband on December 26, 1989; her parents; one brother: Karl; and one sister: Berta Fischer.
