Wayne Hughes, 48, services held
Funeral services for Wayne Hughes, Lt. Col, USAF (Ret) were held on Saturday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Rev. Robert Holdorf officiated. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Wayne, 48, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 in Phoenix, AZ following a long battle with cancer.
Wayne Eugene Hughes was born March 18, 1952 in Cresco, the son of Eddie and Gertrude (Collins) Hughes. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1970 and attended the University of Iowa graduating with a degree in business administration in 1974. He received his Master of Arts degree in international relations from Troy State University.
On June 8, 1974 he married Julianne Horkulic.
Wayne retired as an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel at Luke Air Force Base in November 1995, after a distinguished career as “fighter pilot.” He began his military career joining the Air Force ROTC while attending the University of Iowa. He attended pilot training in Laughlin AFB, TX, with advance F-4 training at MacDill AFB, FL. During his military career, he flew the F-4 and the F-16, while stationed at Hahn AFB, Germany; Clark AFB, Philippines; and Ramstein AFB, Germany. He later served as an International Military Affairs Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, Washington D.C.
After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for McDonnell Douglas as an F-16 simulator instructor. In 1995 he began is career as a commercial airline pilot for Northwest Airlines.
Survivors include his wife Julie; two children: Jeremy and Erin; his parents; and five brothers: James, Jarry, Donald, David, and Robert.
