Services held for Harry Henkes
Funeral services for Harry Henkes were held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19 at the St. Joseph’s Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Harry, 93, died Saturday, November 17, 2001 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.
Harry Leroy Henkes was born March 5, 1908 in Clayton County, near Farmersburg, the son of Melvin John and Barbara (Walter) Henkes. He attended rural school.
On November 1, 1929 he married Esther Herold in Carroll. Harry was a farmer and naturalist.
He enjoyed yard work, growing flowers, was avid in feeding the birds, a baseball player and fan.
In later years, Harry became a good cook. He was a former member of the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by two sons: Melvin and Harold, both of Cresco; three daughters: Sister Lea, FSPA (Olive) of Cresco, Verna Dralle and Charlotte Henkes, both of Wabasha, MN; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Harry was preceded in death by his wife Esther in 1997; one daughter: Shirley Weis; his parents; three brothers: Fred, Dayton, and Lenis; and three sisters: Gladys Sickel, Ruby Winders, and Marie Leferink.
