Services held for Al Hemesath, 78
Funeral services for Al Hemesath were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 4, at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Pallbearers were nephews: Gary, Todd, and Cliff Hemesath, Larry and Wayne Huinker, and Gary Elsbemd. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Al, 78, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN after a week’s stay.
Alphonse John Hemesath was born August 17, 1922 near Ossian, the son of Henry and Alvina (Scheidel) Hemesath. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, attended DeSales School in Ossian and returned to help on the family farm. Prior to his marriage, he helped his brother operate the roller skating rink in Ossian and enjoyed flying an airplane.
On May 20, 1947 he married DeEtta Huinker at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Following their marriage they farmed northwest of Cresco on three different farms for eight years before purchasing their home farm three miles west of Ridgeway in Lincoln Township. In 1985, they moved to a farm in Bluffton Township where they discontinued milking and raised beef cattle. He retired in December of 1999 because of ill health. In the year 2000, they took a cruise.
Al enjoyed farming; was his own mechanic and carpenter, and enjoyed training horses.
He is survived by his wife DeEtta; four daughters: Mary Jeanne Hemesath of West St. Paul, MN, Marcia Grimm of Knoxville, Maxine Humpal of Ridgeway, Donna Baumler of West Union; two sons: Mark of Ridgeway and Matthew also of Ridgeway; ten grandchildren; three brothers: Henry of Monona, Arthur and Elmer both of Ossian; and One sister: Doris Huber of Reno, NV.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Joseph.
