Funeral services for Ruben Gamez were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Pallbearers were his nephews: Kylan Gamez, Kole Gamez, Wayne Cummings, Jeff Gamez, Mario Gamez and David Lopez. Honorary pallbearers were his brothers: Daniel, Charles, Adolph, and David Gamez. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ruben died on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 in Cresco.
Ruben Z. Gamez was born September 8, 1939 in Mason, MI the son of Daniel and Rita (Zavaia) Gamez. When a young man, the family moved to many areas where employment was available, living in Michigan, Texas, back to Michigan, and eventually, to Minnesota where Ruben graduated from Austin High School. He then attended Hamilton Business College in Mason city, graduating with an Associate Degree in Business in 1960. In 1961, he was called upon to serve his country and entered the Army in August of 1962, he was stationed in Germany where he met his future wife.
On September 3, 1963 he married Johanna Abberger in St. Georgen, Germany. In December of 1963, he returned to the U.S. and was honorably discharged. They made their first home in Decorah. In September of 1965 they moved to Minneapolis, MN living there until 1969. From fall 1969 to spring 1975 Ruben and his family made St. Georgen, Germany their home, where he was employed by a german firm, within its export sales department. In 1975 the family returned to ther U.S. settling in Cresco. Although Ruben found successful employment with various fields, his primary interest focused upon sales and brokerage.
He enjoyed music, reading, exploring the information superhighway, gardening, and engaging in outdoor activities and home improvement projects.
He is survived by his wife Johanna; two sons: Robert of Manhattan, KS and Paul of Cedar Rapids; his parents: Daniel and Rita Gamez of Cresco; four brothers: Daniel Jr. of Pensacola, FL, Chal- res of Arcadia, WI, David of Hastings, MN, and Adolph of Cresco; four sisters: Rosa Lopez of Des Moines, Josephine Cummings of Lansing, MN, Diane Grandia, of Grand Rapids, MI, and Denise Gamez of Wheaton, IL.
