Funeral services for Frank Elwood of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Frank, 85, died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
Frank Dowd Elwood was born June 9, 1916 in Elma, the son of Reed and Goldie (Dowd) Elwood. He attended Elma Public School graduating in 1933. He graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1938 and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1940. He served in the Infantry and Army Air Corps for five years during World War II, rising from private to captain. In 1945 he came to Cresco and started practicing law with his uncles Dale and Lee W Elwood in the law firm of Elwood, Lysons, and Elwood.
Frank was elected and served as County Attorney for eight years from 1947 to 1955. He also served as attorney for the local school board. While Frank was campaigning for County Attorney, he met Patricia Emal, who came to Cresco to teach. They were married on June 29, 1947 in Iowa Falls and made Cresco their home. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cresco.
Frank was elected to the State Senate from Howard and Winneshiek Counties in 1954 and served in the Iowa Senate until 1959. He then resumed full time law practice in Cresco. Frank retired from law practice in 1973 when he was appointed a State District Court Judge. He served in that capacity until 1981. He then served as a Senior Judge until 1982. He then entered law practice with his cousin, Henry L. Elwood in Cresco in the firm of Elwood and Elwood until his retirement in 1993.
Frank was active in community affairs. He served as president of Friends of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Inc, and headed the fund drive leading to the construction of the current hospital in Cresco. He is a past president of Kiwanis, a past member of the Cresco Industrial Development Corporation, and a recipient of the Community Service Award. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He is survived by his children: Robert of Cresco, Kathy Manley of Anamosa, and Steve of Decorah; eight grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one brother: Reed; and one infant sister.
