Marian Elwood. 104, services held
Funeral services for Marian Elwood of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30 at the First Congregational Church in Cresco with Rev. Tim Sir officiating. Interment was in the family plot at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Marian, 104, died Monday, November 26, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. She was residing in her own home and was taken to the Mayo Clinic after suffering a hip fracture on November 23.
Marian George Elwood was born January 25, 1897 on the family farm in Dover Township, Fayette County, the daughter of Henry and Laura (Phelps) George. She attended rural Fayette County schools and high school in West Union graduating in 1916. She attended Grinnell College and the University of Iowa. Marian received a teaching certificate and taught third grade at West Union from 1919 through 1921.
On December 27, 1921 she married Dale Elwood of Elma. The couple lived in Iowa City while Dale was completing law school. They moved to Cresco in 1922 where Dale, along with his brother Lee, founded the Elwood law firm. Dale and Marian were skilled bridge players. For many years, beginning as early as 1946, they spent their winter vacations on the gulf coast of Florida, adding to their prize collection of rare seashells. She also enjoyed her rose garden at her Cresco home.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Cresco, the PEO Sisterhood, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons: George of DeWitt and Henry of Cresco; one daughter: Frances Melvold of Maquoketa; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband Dale in 1971; one daughter: Mildred Butler; her parents; one brother: Russell; and one sister: Mildred George.
