Funeral services tor Jerome L. Drilling, a former Cresco native, were held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, July 10. Interment was at the El Comino Veterans Memorial Cemetery, with services by the military, the San Diego Fire Department and the Order of the Alhambras. Benbough Mortuary handled the arrangements.
Jerome, 84, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 of heart failure.
On June 7, 1941 he married Verna Wall of Spearfish, SD at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in San Diego.
Following his tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines during World War II, he returned to his career with the San Diego Fire Department, having attained the rank of assistant fire chief upon his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Verna; two sons: Jerry of Jerico Springs, MO and Greg of El Cajon, CA; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters: Arlene McGuigan of San Diego and Helen Valvoda of Oelwein; and one brother: Virgil of Des Moines.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents Nick and Teresa; and three brothers: Hugo, Arnold and Edward.
