Another Old Settler Gone-
John M. Field died June 6, 1897, on the farm upon which he located and bought from the government, in Vernon Springs, nearly forty-three years ago. He was born in Somersetshire, England, June 16, 1817, and came to the United States when 21 years of age, residing in the state of New York some thirteen years or more. December 29, 1842, he was united in marriage with Sophia A. Loomis, at Cicero, New York, who survives him. In 1854 or the early part of 1855, they came to this county making it their permanent home since. Four daughters were born to them, three of whom were with him in his last hours. They were Mrs. Ida B. Reynolds of Elma, Mrs. Ella D. Tibbetts of Kansas, and Mrs. Alice M. Gallup of this city; Cora L., wife of John Mulholland, died in Cresco several years since. The deceased has been a great sufferer for the past two months and in feeble health for some years. Mr. Field was one of our best citizens, pure in heart, honest in purpose, upright in conduct. He was honored and respected, by all who knew him. His funeral will be from his late home today to the Oak Lawn cemetary.{sic}
