Mr. Harris was engaged in the mercantile business at Palmyra and at Madison, Wisconsin for a number of years removing to Cedar Falls where he continued the mercantile business adding thereto the business of grain and produce dealer, holding the office of post master for a number of year in Cedar Falls. In the fall of 1866 he removed to Cresco and engaged exclusively in the grain and produce trade. But two children were born to them both surviving him, Kittie the wife of Chas. P. During the thirty years of his life in Cresco, almost the allotted period of the average life of man, Mr. Harris had been esteemed by all the people of Howard County and from other counties whose market was at this place as one who had, and merited the utmost confidence of the public. He was the soul of honor in all his transactions, public and private and his friends were co-extensive with his acquaintance. His confinement in his last illness was of brief duration lasting but two days ere the last summons came.
