Iowa Plain Dealer October 30, 1896, FP, C4

Mrs. Margaret Irwin.
Mrs. Margaret Irwin passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dr. Roome, last Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 1896, almost without a moment’s warning, of heart failure, aged 73 years and 3 days.
Margaret Thompson was born in England in 1823, moved with her parents to Canada in 1834, and was married to Robert Irwin in 1851; her husband passing over to the other shore within a few short months after their marriage—in 1853—and when their only child, Mrs. Dr. Roome, was but three month’s old.
Mrs. Irwin had been in poor health for some months. She visited her old home in Canada during the summer, but did not find that relief she hoped for. She was about the house until within about two weeks prior to her death, and had complained of a severe pain in the region of her heart and stomach for a day or two, but as she had often been afflicted with this difficulty, no immediate serious results were anticipated. A short time before she passed away, Mrs. Irwin said she felt better and talked of her future plans, and thought she could partake of a little nourishment; accordingly Mrs. Roome prepared a bowl of gruel, but it was too hot and she carried it out to cool; returning in a very few moments, finding her mother dead.
Mrs. Irwin has made her home with Dr. and Mrs. Roome since their marriage, with the exception of short intervals when she visited her old home in Canada.
Funeral services were held at the house Friday at 11:00 a. m., conducted by Rev. Holmes, and the body was laid at rest in Oaklawn. Besides a large number of friends and neighbors, Dr. and Mrs. Roome, of Calmar, attended the last sad rites.—Republican
