Richard D. “Dick” Payton, 88, of Cresco, IA, formerly of rural Lime Springs, IA died on Sunday Aug. 26, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. Richard D. “Dick” Payton was born March 5, 1924, in Perry, Iowa, the eldest son of four boys of Daniel M. and Dorothy A. (Parcel) Payton. He graduated from Williams High School in 1942. After graduation he continued farming with his dad. On April 10, 1945 he married Opal N. Frette at the Rose Grove Lutheran Church in Williams, Iowa. They farmed in the Blairsburg and Ogden areas before moving to northeast Iowa in March 1956. Dick was a farmer and drove a milk truck for Cresco Co-Op creamery. He was an active Farm Bureau member. He won the State Award for signing the most new members. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool with his grandchildren, and playing card – the game of 500. His greatest love was his horses! Throughout the years he broke horses to ride and to drive. He was a member of the Cresco Saddle Club and enjoyed riding Rocket on the various trail rides. In his later years he participated in numerous parades with his various teams of horses, the last team being Kim and Kelly. He also loved giving horse drawn wagon rides to family and friends, including the Holiday Lights tour in Cresco. Survivors include his daughters: Norma Jean (Eugene) Pecinovsky of Cambridge and Janice (Dean) Hauge of Mason City; grandchildren Scott (Chelly) Pecinovsky, Shannon Pecinovsky, Kimberly (Darrin) White, and Kelly (Brandon) Lane; great-grandchildren: Ashlynn and Mallary Pecinovsky; Cadin, Lilli and Danica Pecinovsky; Caleb White; and Carter and Lexa Lane: sister-in-laws: Alveda Payton of Thorton, Iowa; Carol Payton of Liberty, Missouri; and Helen Norem of Ames, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, of 64 years; his parents: Daniel M. and Dorothy A. Payton; his in-laws: Ole P. and Nettie K. Frette; his brothers: Donald, Harold, and Robert; and his nephew: Ronald Payton.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Mason City, IA. The committal service will be at 2:30 PM.
