Joann Elizabeth DePaul, a longtime resident of Cresco, Iowa was granted her angel wings on April 10, 2012, at the age of 65, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Her final days were spent at the Cresco Care Center, surrounded by family and friends that Joann had touched in some small way throughout her life. The memory of Joann’s caring heart and helping hands cannot be diminished by the disease that took her. Joann entered this world on March 5, 1947 to Joseph and Helen DePaul in Philadelphia, PA, where she received a Catholic education while growing up. She later moved to New Jersey, where she met Joseph Garrison, to whom she was wed in 1972. They had one child, Melissa Joann, in 1975. They were divorced in 1977. In 1987, Joann gave birth to her second child, Dawn Marie. The two of them resided in New Jersey until 1997, when they were reunited with Melissa and moved to Iowa, where Joann dedicated her spare time to helping her daughters raise their children. Throughout her life, Joann held various positions in hotels and nursing homes, favoring housekeeping positions. She was employed by the Cresco Super 8 for ten years, and prior to that was employed by the Cresco Care Center, where she was happy to return to many old friends in her final days. Joann enjoyed a variety of activities, such as reading, needlepoint, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and riding her bike. Many people knew her by her bicycle, which she would often be spotted riding to various places throughout the small town in which she resided. Joann was a devoted friend, a loving mother, and a grandchild’s dream come true. She always thought of others, and never hesitated to help a person in need. Joann was preceded in death by both of her parents, and is survived by two daughters, Melissa (36) and Dawn (24) and four grandchildren, Dakota (13), Dalton (10), Elizabeth (4), and Dawson (newborn).
