Donald J. Berka, 63, of Ridgeway, died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 7, 2011 in Medina, Ohio of natural causes.

Donald was born in Cresco on April 24, 1948, the son of Joseph and Georgine Berka. He graduated from Notre Dame high school in 1966. During high school he worked at Ben Franklin's in Cresco, and following high school he worked for Louis Balk Lime and Ready-Mix. After leaving Balk's he followed his life-long dream and became an over-the-road trucker.

Donald married his wife Valerie (Carter) Berka on August 14, 1976 in Cresco. They lived together in Cresco until 1978, when they moved to an acreage near Ridgeway. After they moved to Ridgeway, Donald again worked for Balk's until 1992, when he went back to driving semi. He remained in the trucking profession until his death.

Donald enjoyed gardening, collecting, watching sports, and handiwork. He was an avid follower of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and playing with his grandchildren. Donald was a lifelong member of Assumption and Notre Dame Parishes.

He is survived by two sons, Kevin (Julie) Carter of Cresco, IA and Josh (Angie) Berka of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Beth Carter of Onawa, Iowa; Kristina, Chance and Connor Carter, of Cresco; two sisters, Deb (Lester) Hyke of Cresco and Doris (Tom) Taylor of Versailles, KY; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Georgine Berka, and a brother-in-law, Phil Wolfe.

Cemetery:
Cremation will follow services at the church.

Visitation:
Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2011, where there will be a scripture service toward the ending time of visitation. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church.

Service:
A funeral mass will take place at Notre Dame Parish on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, Iowa.
