Paul John Ristau, 82, of Cresco Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.
Paul was born March 17, 1928 in Carimona Township, MN to August and Ione (Drummond) Ristau and grew up in the Carimona and Preston area. He entered military service November 27, 1950. Trained with infantry units at Fort Riley, Kansas and sailed from San Francisco April 7th for overseas duty during the Korean War. Sergeant Paul J. Ristau was wounded twice in one month and was awarded a Purple Heart and the Oak Leaf Cluster.
Upon his honorable discharge and he return to Minnesota where he worked in construction in Rochester. He married Barbara McConnell on July 10, 1954 at St Bridget's Catholic Church in Simpson MN and they made their home on farms in Carimona Township where he milked cows and started a milk hauling business. Later he sold the Milk hauling business to Joe Moen and concentrated on farming. Sold the farm in 1975 and moved to Cresco, IA where he purchased the Cresco Livestock Exchange. He later sold that business and went into the trucking and order buying business until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards with friends and taking Sunday drives and cross-country trips with his favorite chauffeur, Barb.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary (Neil) Fishbaugher of Canton MN, Debbie (Tim) Harrington of Poulsbo,WA and Roxie Munyon of Poulsbo, WA; a son, Mark Ristau of Cresco IA; He has 7 grandchildren, Nikki, Corey, Bill, Rachele, Joel, Marc and Nadia. He also has 6 great-grandchildren, Michael, Hanna, Payton, David, Danny and Patrick. He is also survived by three brothers, Russell (Donna), Vernon (Kay), and Ervin (Judy) all of Preston, MN and a sister Evelyn McGrand of Hutchinson, MN.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, who died on July 11, 2010. Paul's three brothers (Arnold, Kenneth, Arthur) and two sisters (Esther, Ione) also preceded him in death.
Cemetery:
Burial will be at the St Bridget's Cemetery in Simpson MN at 2:00 p.m. Preston, MN VFW Post 6893 will conduct military rites.Visitation:
Visitation will take place Friday September 24, 2010, at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco IA, from 4 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church.Service:
The Mass of Christian Burial for Paul J Ristau will be at 10:00 am. Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco Iowa, with the Msgr. Richard Funke officiating.
