Esther Knowlton, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. C. Knowlton, was born in Chateraggus county, N. Y. Nov. 22, 1840.
A the age of 3 or 4 years she, with her family moved to Wisconsin and in 1855 to Iowa, locating in the Old Town of Lime Springs, her family being among the first pioneer settlers.
She was married to Henry E. Ober Nov. 22, I860. Three children were born to them, two dying in infancy and one daughter. Mrs. Selden Crockett of Rugby, N. D., was with her during most of her illness.
She was taken sick Thanksgiving night and passed away Dec. 8, 1914.
Mrs. Ober united with the Presbyterian church during the pastorate of Rev. Adam Craig and for 50 years has been faithful member exemplifying by her life the beautiful precepts of love, sympathy and self-sacrifice for others, taught by her Savior in whose footsteps she walked. To know her, was to love and respect her. Once a friend, always a friend. Those who knew her longest best appreciated the depth of her character and the purity of her life. She was an exemplary wife and mother and it was in her home that her life shone brightest, making it the most attractive place for her husband and daughter and friends.
The whole community is saddened by her death and the family has the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
“As she walked and talked by the way the Chariot of the Lord came and took her away,” and her unfinished work is left for other hands to complete. May the mantle of her Christian spirit fall upon us all.
