Harlan Leo Henry was born on June 2, 1930, the son of Lawrence and Madeline (McCabe) Henry in Cresco, Iowa. Harlan attended country school near Bluffton and Plymouth Rock and attended school at Canton High School in Canton, MN. As a young man, Harlan worked with his father on the farm. Harlan was united in marriage to Mary Loretta Gossman on September 10, 1956, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton. To this union, four children were born: Laureen, Terry, Randal and Lynn. Together, Harlan and Loretta farmed all their lives, first near Plymouth Rock, and then moving to the Bluffton farm in 1960. Harlan was an avid hunter and fisherman in his spare time; however, his true love was raising cattle, pigs, sheep and cropping while working to support his family that he loved dearly. He also enjoyed going to farm auctions and to have a beer with his buddies. Harlan was a stranger to no one. In August 2001, Harlan suffered with a severe head inquiry due to a tractor accident. Since then, he has spent the last fifteen years in skilled nursing at the New Hampton Care Center and Wellington Place in Decorah. In Harlan’s younger years, he loved his vehicles. He could always be heard on his Harley coming to pick up Loretta for a date. He also enjoyed his 1955 black and pink Ford Fairlane and his red Ford convertible. Harlan was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.
