PROTIVIN - John C. Swestka, 81, Protivin, died Tuesday, April 4 at the Cresco Care Center of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 7 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Protivin, with Rev. Allen Schmitt as celebrant. Marlene Pecinovsky will be organist, accompanying the Holy Trinity Choir. A granddaughter, Jill Munsinger will be pianist and Miriam Humpal will be vocalist. The pall will be placed on the casket by his wife and children. Presenting the offertory gifts will be grandchildren, Shelli Robins, Tiffany Swestka, Carla Kroening, Carol Gorman, Stacy Swestka and Terri Swestka. Eucharistic minister will be Roberta Swestka. Mass servers will be Randy, Tim and Whitney Swestka.

Interment is in Holy Trinity Cemetery with Dean Lukes, Todd Townsend, Matt Mashek, Kirk Swestka, Chad Jensen, Jason Swestka, Brian Swestka and Bobby Swestka as pallbearers.

Visitation was after 3 p.m. Thursday, April 6 at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home, with a 4 p.m. Parish Scripture Service and a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary.

John was born in rural Protivin on Jan. 27,1919, the son of John C. and Rosy (Pecinovsky) Svestka. He attended school in Protivin, graduating from Rudolphinum High School in 1936. On May 14, 1941, he married Marcella Denner at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton. The couple lived and farmed west of Protivin until John retired in 1975, at which time they moved into Protivin. During the years on the farm and while in town, John owned and operated the Protivin Saw Mill until around 1984. He took up woodworking after moving to town and had made many items for family and friends. Memberships and activities include Fourth Degree-Knights of Columbus; Holy Trinity Church Board; the Church and Czech Choirs; Farm Bureau; Asgrow seed dealer; maintenance manager of the Protivin Apartments; manager of the Protivin Community Center and co-chair of the first Czech Days Festival.

Survivors include his wife, Marcella; four sons, Art (Wanda) Swestka, Protivin, Ron (Joyce) Swestka, John (Joanie) Swestka and Gary (Roberta) Swestka, all of Cresco; four daughters, Rita (Virgil) Lukes, Rochester, MN, Donna (Jim) Townsend, Grinnell, Mary Jean (Jim) Mashek, Jesup, Sheryl (Ron) Jensen, Byron, MN; 19 grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one granddaughter, Janice Mashek; a great- granddaughter, Mercedes Mashek; three brothers, Louis, Leonard and Godfrey Swestka; two sisters, Emma Komarek and Theresa Komarek.
