Funeral services for Leona Schreiber of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 27 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. Rev. Michael Parris officiated. Interment was in the Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Leona, 83, died Saturday, December 23, 2000 at the Riceville Community Rest Home.
Leona Clara Schreiber was born May 11, 1917 in Saratoga Township, Howard County the daughter of Wilhelm and Anna (Ball) Groth. She attended local schools and graduated from Riceville High School and from Luther College in Decorah. Leona taught in two Howard County rural schools, Riceville Elementary and Osage Elementary Schools.
On June 30, 1938 she married Lyle Shultz at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in rural Elma.
She was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Riceville, a past Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was a charter member in the Riceville Wa-tan-ye club. She was also an active member of the Cedar Valley Retired School Personnel Association, the Over 60 Club, and the Live and Learn Club.
Leona married Arlin Schreiber on October 18, 1969 at the Riceville United Methodist Church.
As a life long resident of Howard and Mitchell counties she enjoyed traveling all over the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. She accompanied her son and family on an extended trip visiting several European countries. And later took another extended trip to Western Pacific countries.
She was a dedicated sports fan, regularly attending the local games and meets, in addition to the local musical and drama presentations.
Survivors include one daughter: Betty Borchardt of Riceville; one son: Leland Schultz of Panama City, FL; one step-son Lauren Schreiber of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; one step-grandchild; and two step-great grandchildren; and one sister: Alvina Buis of Sara¬toga.
Leona was preceded in death by her second husband Arlin in 1980; her parents; and four brothers: Walter, Norbert, Leonard, and Erdman.
