ELMA — Donald J. Roethler, 67, died Tuesday, April 11 of cancer at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 14 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Pastor Matthew Versemann presiding. Organist was Bud Noble. A trio of Anna Mae Roethler, Margaret Jordan and Shirley Brown sang "Softly and Tenderly" and Precious Memories". The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "My Faith Looks Up To Thee".

Inurnment will be in the church cemetery at a later date.

Visitation was from 3 tp 8 p.m, on Thursday, April 13 at Conway Funeral Home in Elma and at the church an hour before service time. There was a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Donald Joseph Roethler was born May 6, 1932 at the rural Elma in Howard County farm home of his parents, Leo and Mae (Mussmann) Roethler. He attended Afton #4 Rural School and was a -1951 graduate of Riceville High School.

Don married Lavonne Worple on Feb. 12, 1955 at St. Peter's Church in Riceville. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. The couple lived in Waterloo for a time after his discharge and later they farmed for 32 years in the Riceville/Elma area before retiring to Elma in 1991.

Don enjoyed playing the guitar and and composed eight contemporary Christian songs. Don and Lorraine enjoyed singing spiritual songs together at church, prayer meetings and at home. His music and gardening brought him joy and peace.

Survivors include his wife, Lavonne; a son, Bruce of Colonial Manor Home, Elma; a daughter, Brenda (Steve) Schroetter, Lime Springs; six grandchildren; a great-grand¬son; two daughters-in-law, Crystal Roethler, Charles City and Theresa Kocbrich, Hampton; six brothers, Milo, Water¬loo, Wally (June), Waukon, Kenneth (Evelyn), Charles City, James (Anna Mae), Lime Springs, LeRoy (Marge), Elma and Robert (Darlys), Orchard; and one sister, Lavonne (Burl) Armstrong, Waterloo.

Preceding him in death were a grandson, Brandon Pearson; his parents; one brother, John (Jack); and one sister, Lucille Roney.
