Eugene Perry, 70, of Riceville dies

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista for Eugene (Gene) Perry, 70, of Riceville, formerly of Alta Vista, who died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.)

The Reverend Peter D. Peterson and Reverend Reg Torrison will officiate at the memorial service. Inurnment will be in the Union Cemetery in Alta Vista with military honors provided by the VFW Post 4069 of Alta Vista.

Honorary pallbearers will be Les Perry, Greg Perry and Katie Perry, Jane Kluender, Mike Richardson, and Cathy Koenig.

Eugene Floyd Perry was born January 5, 1930 at the Bristol Township, Fillmore County family home, the son of Benjamin Harris and May (Glazier) Perry. He was baptized at the parental home on Februray 2, 1930.

Mr. Perry served in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1950 as an airplane power mechanic. He then served in the Air Force Re¬serve until 1953 as Airman First Class. He was married to Phylis Rue on Sept. 25, 1950, and that union produced four children. They later divorced.

Mr. Perry worked as a route salesman for Jewel Tea and Marigold Milk. After farming for a number of years he worked as a mechanic for Ernie Novak in Protivin, Ingersoll's and Culbert's in Cresco. While working at Culbert's he met and married Darlene Mohrhauser Richardson on Sept. 3, 1970. The couple farmed east of Lime Springs for four years. Mr. Perry then worked as a welder for Welp and McCarten in Mason City and McNeilus Steel in Dodge Center, Minnesota, retiring in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Darlene Perry of Riceville, children, Leslie Perry of Riceville, Greg Perry of Byron, Minn., Kathleen Perry of Capitola, Calif., and Jane Kluender of Cresco; stepchildren, Ken Richardson of Waverly, Michael Richardson of Cresco, Cathy Rae Koenig of Castalia, seven grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, one great grandchild on the way; and one step-great-grandson; two sisters, Evelyn Niemann of Sumner and Maxine Bechtum of Riceville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, May and Harry Perry.
