from Elma library collection assembled by Marian (Marr) McGeePROTIVIN - Helen Pechota, 87, died Sunday, May 28 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Rev. Allen M. Schmitt presided. Laura Lukes and Miriam Humpal sang a duet: "On This Day O Beautiful Mother", and the Holy Trinity Choir provided the music accompanied by Marlene Pecinovsky at the organ. Casket bearers were Ron Lukes, John Lukes, Gary Lukes, Victor Lukes, Steven Lukes and James Kovarik. Altar servers were Kelsey Heinrich and Andy Zajicek, Eucharistic Minister was Joseph G. Lukes, and the gifts were presented by Helen Jean Lundell, Betty Minton and David Pechota. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery at Little Turkey.
Helen Therese Pechota was born on Jan. 29,1913 at Protivin, the daughter of Godlove G. and Cecelia T. (Novak) Lukes. She attended the area country schools and Holy Trinity Catholic School.
On Sept. 1, 1931, she was united in marriage to Gene A. Pechota at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1981. Helen lived in Britt and worked for Selby's Produce Processors prior to her retirement and moving back to Protivin in 1985. In April of 1999 she moved into the Residential Care Facility and lived there until her death. Helen had many hobbies and pastimes, cake baking and decorating, making hobo dolls, jewelry trees and sequin decorated pictures. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Holy Trinity Rosary Society and the Catholic Workmen.
Survivors include her children: Helen Jean Lundell and her husband Art, Ft. Dodge, Betty Lou Minton and her husband Robert, Huntington, NY and David John Pechota and his wife Linda, Huntington, NY; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Anne Lukes and Dorothy Kovarik.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Gene in 1982, a brother Arthur in 1987, a grandson David Lundell and a brother-in-law, Ben Kovarik.
