Services held for Florence Matt

Funeral services for Florence Matt of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday , October 12 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Cresco. Rev. Paul Lionberger officiated. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Derek Stevenson, Jared Matt, Andrea Stevenson, Drew Stevenson, Desmond Matt, Shane Matt, Alicia Stevenson, and Tiffany Matt. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Florence, 106, died Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at the Evans Memorial Home.

Florence Maria Dorthea Matt was born July 8, 1894 the daughter of Louis and Alvina Kurdelmeier. She was baptized in Monona at August 12, 1894 at Zion Lutheran.

On November 3, 1915 she married Hugo Matt at Zion Lutheran in Monona. Rev. Otto Wappler officiated.

Florence was like a mother to her brothers after their mother passed away when Florence was 16. She kept house for her father and family and helped raise her brothers.

Florence and Hugo farmed until 1945 when they moved to Cresco. While living in town Florence worked at the West End Grocery for Dick Fencl for many years. She was active in church, sang in the choir and was a past president of the Ladies Aid. The loss of her eye sight in 1977 made it necessary for her to enter the Evans Memorial Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Gruett of Bellingham, WA; one son: LeRoy “Bud” Matt of Cresco; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; five step great-great-grandchildren; and one brother: Roy Kurdelmeier of Harmony, MN.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband Hugo in 1963; one son: Louis at two years of age; one grandson; one great-great-granddaughter; her parents, and three brothers: Eldo, Louis and Alvin.
