Dr. Donald Maland services held

Funeral services for Dr. Donald Maland were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at St. Joseph Worship Center in Cresco. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pall bearers were: David Fishbaugher, Harold McGuire, Dusty Bumikel, Brian Burnikel M.D., Alan Burnikel D.V.M., Dale Burnikel, and Don Fosburgh. Honorary pall bearers were: George Vachta, Dr. Peter Kepros, Dr. Stan Kepros, Ken Bergan, Allard Bergan, Arnold Skoda, Merlin Kratz, Ray Baumgartner, and John Moe. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Dr. Maland, 83, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital.

Donald Maland was born October 5, 1916 in Harmony, MN, the son of M. Wallace and Anna Marie (Tiegen) Maland. Dr. Maland attended only kindergarten in Harmony before he and his parents moved to Cresco where he completed grades one through twelve. He attended the University of Iowa for eight years where he received his medical degree. Dr. Maland completed one year of internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN.

He served in the Army Medical Corp. from January 1944 through October 1946. He then returned to Cresco where he practiced medicine for 30 years.

On January 30, 1961 he married LaVone Burnikel.

Survivors include his wife, LaVone; one daughter Patricia; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
