from Elma library collection assembled by Marian (Marr) McGeeLOURDES - James E. Hyke, 69, Lourdes, died Monday, May 1 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 4 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, with Rev. Roger R. Rethamel presiding. Theresa Burke was organist, accompanying the church choir. Hymns included "On Eagle's Wings", "Here I Am Lord", "Be Not Afraid" and "Let there Be Peace On Earth". Jim's wife and children placed the pall on the casket and his grandchildren were gift bearers. Lector was Francis Nibaur and Eucharistic Ministers were Joe Praska and Peg Nibaur.
Interment was in the church cemetery with Jeremy Hyke, Brian Riley, Francis Nibaur, Robert Flaherty, Tom Nehl and Rick Bollman serving as casket bearers.
Visitation was from 3-8 .m. Wednesday, May 3 at Conway Funeral Home in Elma, with a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service and also an hour before services at the church.
James Edward Hyke was born Sept. 2, 1930 near Lourdes in the home of his parents, Adolph and Millie (Marik) Hyke. He attended the Lourdes School and was married April 16, 1951 to Arlene Nibaur at Our Lady of Lourdes Church by Father Noonan. Jim and Arlene have lived all their married life in Lourdes where they farmed until ill health forced Jim into retirement. He worked part time in maintenance for the Lourdes church and cemetery grounds. Jim enjoyed gardening and fishing and especially being with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Arlene; two daughters, Deb (Tim) Riley, New Hampton, Ann, (Terry) Ollendieck, Ridgeway; one son, Tim Hyke and friend, Barb Rosonke, Cresco; eight grandchildren; one brother, John, New Auburn, WI; four sisters, Margaret Fogarty and Everista Williams, both of Cedar Rapids, Virginia Nehl, Waterloo, Mary (Boyd) Bollman, Cresco; a sister-in-law, Mary Jean Hyke, Cresco.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Betty Hyke; two brothers, Tom and Raymond Hyke.
