from Elma library collection assembled by Marian (Marr) McGeeFuneral services for Clazena “Chloe” Dykema of Waverly, formerly of Elma, were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 1 at the United Methodist Church in Elma. Rev. Catherine Luck and Rev. Keith Tomlinson officiated. Interment was in the Roseland Reformed Church Cemetery in Roseland, MN on Saturday, December 2 at 11:00 a.m. Kaiser Corson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clazena, 77, died Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
Clazena Dykema was born February 27, 1923 in Hull, the daughter of Arie and Francina Bomgaars. Clazena was baptized at infancy, and made confession of her faith at the First Reformed Church in Hull. She attended the Perkin’s Christian School graduating as Valedictorian in 1935, and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull in 1939. She attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City.
On September 10, 1948 she married Harley Dykema in Sheldon. They moved to Knoxville, Glidden, and Elma because of her husband’s occupation.
Music was her love and ambition, starting and directing church choirs wherever they moved.
After 20 years of household and family management, she ventured into Business Office work at Montgomery Ward, J.C. Penney’s, Northwestern Bell Telephone company, and Carroll Bank.
After her husband’s death on June 3, 1981, she joined the Elma Colonial Manor Staff as Activity Coordinator and Social Work Designer and continued this work for 15 years.
Her love for music continued when she organized and directed the “Elma Centennial Singers.” Survivors include two daughters: Carla Cooley of Waverly and Paula Kaler of Lincoln, IL; one son: Douglas of Plant City, FL; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister: Margaret Vogel of Hull.
Clazena was preceded in death by her husband Harley; one son: Kenneth; two sisters: Margerita and Jennie; and one brother: Arvin.
