DONALD DEAN BIWER

Private memorial services for Donald Biwer, in celebration of his life, will be held in Chicago, for his family and close friends.

Donald, formerly of Cresco, died at is home in Chicago, IL, on November 18, 2000 after a valiant fight against cancer.

Donald Dean Biwer was born April 22, 1952 in Cresco, the son of Paul Leo and Florence (Shea) Biwer. Don attended Assumption Grade School and Notre Dame High School where he excelled in academics and also held many class offices.

As a young man, he enjoyed Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, advancing to Eagle Scout Explorer and then Life Scout. Later as a Life Scout Instructor, he worked with other young Scouts.

In 1969, Don received the Bronze Medal of Heroism, presented by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, for saving two men from drowning in the Turkey River near Cresco.

After graduation from Notre Dame High in 1970, he spent a year in Argentina, where he attended the Catholic University of La Plata.

After his return to the United States, Don attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He then received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations from Hamline University in St. Paul in 1977.

After spending several summers teaching English and traveling in France, Don and a friend set up an International Travel Agency.

Don’s fluency in Spanish, French, Portugese and Italian languages served him well in his furniture and bedding business, which he established in St. Paul in 1976. He added manufacturing and warehousing locations in Madison, Wisconsin and Chicago. In the mid 1980’s however he moved all operations of his company, “Homebodies” to Chicago.

Survivors include two brothers: Jim and Mark; six sisters: Marie Walsh, Joan Jordahl, Irene Krieg, Ruth Frost, Denise Hanson, and Fern Rogers.

Don was preceded in death by his father Paul in 1970; his mother Florence in 1992; and a brother: Paul Cleo in 1952.
