Funeral services for Gertrude “Gertie” Bigalk were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2000 at the Assumption Worship Center in Cresco with interment in Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated with the Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pall bearers were: Tom Vachta, Lonnie Langreck, Jim Beckman, Harold Berge, John Ryan and David Whalen.
Gertie, 79, died Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Gertrude Mary Bigalk was born near Cresco in Winneshiek County on May 7, 1921, the daughter of Ole and Anna (McCabe) Anderson. She attended the rural schools of Winneshiek County.
On August 13, 1970 she married Wayne Bigalk in Denver, CO. She was a lifelong member of the Assumption Catholic Church and member of the Assumption Altar and Rosary Society.
Gertie worked as a doctor’s office nurse for 27 years at the Cresco Medical Center.
She is survived by two sisters: Agnes Beckman of Harmony, MN; and Theresa Vachta of Cresco.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Wayne in 1977; her parents; six brothers: Garnet, Orville, Clarence, Gregory, Leo and Francis; and two sisters: Lucille Carolan and Pauline Anderson who died in infancy.
