LaVern J. Zobeck, age 91, of Elma, IA passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Lourdes, IA. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2016 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 N Elm Street Cresco, IA, with a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the time of service Saturday at the church.

LaVern J. Zobeck was born on June 16, 1924, son of Frank and Grace (Roethler) Zobeck on the family farm in Elma, IA. He attended rural school and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School. In 1945 he enlisted in to the United States Army as a medic during WWII stationed in the South Pacific Islands. During WWII LaVern’s brother Lester was killed at Pearl Harbor. On October 17, 1947, LaVern married Elizabeth “Betty” Slifka at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, IA. Shortly after marriage they moved to California, where they lived for almost 10 years before moving to St. Paul, MN. LaVern and Betty moved back to the Elma area in 1961 to the farm LaVern’s great great grandfather purchased when he moved from Czechoslovakia. LaVern loved being on his farm with Betty living the simple life. They enjoyed making trips around the “horn” and conversations with strangers in McDonalds. He had a strong work ethic and great morals. LaVern taught his children how to be brave and stand up for what is right. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Surviving LaVern is his wife of 67 years Betty Zobeck of Elma, IA, children Steven Zobeck of Columbus, New Mexico, and his children Anitra, Kristen, and Zach, David (Bonita “Bonnie”) Zobeck of Harrisburg, PA, and their children Kelly (Brian) Tillman, Katie (Tudor) Zobeck, and Kimberly (Eric) McKinney, Diane (Darwin) Kueker of Cresco, and Randy (Carol) Zobeck of Ridgeway, IA and their son Jacob, 2 great grandchildren Ella and Ethan Tillman, and a sister Delores (Donald) Knutson of Jerico, IA.

LaVern was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Lester and Jim, and a sister Lorraine.
