Vernon Harlan Jones, age 79, of Lime Springs, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.
Vernon was born July 6, 1933 to Hollis and Inga (Hansen) Jones in Oak Dale Township of Howard County. He was in the Army from 1952 to 1956. On Sept. 20, 1959 he married Carmen Dutton. They farmed in the Riceville area. She passed away on April 16, 1967. On June 21, 1969 he married Lucile (Meyer) Ewy. They owned a filling station in Lime Springs, then had shares in Oak Dale Pallet. After a bout with cancer in 1980, he went on disability. Lucile and Vernon enjoyed dancing and following their favorite bands. They also enjoyed doing Ole and Lena skits. Vernon and Lucile entered the Cresco Care Center in 2010. Lucile preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2010. He went to the Howard Residential Facility for awhile, then back to Cresco Care when his health was failing. Vernon was a member of the Lime Springs American Legion.
Vernon is survived by three siblings, Donald Jones of Chester, Roger (Betty) Jones of Manchester and Carol Mullenbach of Rose Creek, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Zona Jones of Cresco and Dorothy Jones of Adams, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; both wives, Carmen and Lucile; a baby brother; a sister, Lucille in infancy; three brothers Clarence (Donna) Jones, Harold Jones and Walter Jones; a sister, Helen (Lorimer) Eastland; and in-laws, Kay Jones and Clarence Mullenbach.
He fought a hard battle; may he rest in peace.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with Pastor Candareah Carey officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.Source: Lime Springs Herald, April 19, 2013
