John R. (Jack) Robinson, 88, passed away on March 21, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa.
He was born on May 1, 1924 in Saratoga, Iowa to Norman and Hazel (Sigler) Robinson.
Jack resided in Howard County his entire life with the exception of 20 months in the Army. He served during WWII as a heavy duty truck driver during the Luzon campaign in the Philippines. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon W/1 Bronze Battle Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon W/1 Bronze Battle Star, 1 Overseas Service Bar and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his discharge, he returned to truck driving for different livestock companies and for A&K Feed and Grain. He returned to farming in 1950 for seven years on Golden Ridge near Granger. In 1957 he and his family moved to Lime Springs, Iowa where he resided for the rest of his life. He was employed by the Miles Company as a mechanic and tire salesman until 1969 when he was hired by Howard County as a Secondary Road Employee, operating dump trucks and motor graders until his retirement in 1986.
Jack married Mae Keune on April 3, 1947 in her mother’s home in Cresco. They were happily married for 55 years. Jack was a member of Saratoga Presbyterian Church and American Legion Lloyd L. Horton Post #545 of Lime Springs. He was a city council member for two terms, member of the volunteer fire department with a stint as Chief, member of the Howard County Board of Health for 15 years and civic volunteer until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, golf, traveling, visiting and reminiscing with his family and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Mae; parents, Norman and Hazel; a brother, Ronald (Bub) Robinson; a sister, Dorothy Rapp; and brothers-in-law, Dale Keune and Raymond Rapp.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Connie (Arnie) Bakken of Lime Springs; sons, Donald (Ann) Robinson of Iowa City, Iowa and Douglas Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Brian (Michelle) Bakken of Lime Springs, Brady (Kayla) Bakken of Lime Springs, Nathan (Julie) Robinson of Riverside, Iowa, Sarah (Ryan) Lee of Fridley, Minn. and Chad (Jenn) Robinson of Henderson, Nev.; great-grandchildren, Josh (Karie) Bakken of Cresco, Amanda Bakken of Rochester, Minn., Cody Bakken of Lime Springs, Madison Bakken of Lime Springs, Jackson, Chase and Jacob Robinson of Riverside, Iowa and Zoey Robinson of Henderson, Nev.; and great-great grandchildren, Blair and Brylie Bakken of Cresco. He is also survived by his sister, Betty (Harold) Munkel; sister-in-law, Marcella (Dale) Keune and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Lime Springs Community Center, 201 Center St., Lime Springs, with Pastor Tim Sir officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Lunch will follow at the Community Center. Inurnment will follow at a later date.
