Harry was born Jan. 20, 1921 near Lime Springs, Iowa in Howard County to Mary and Art Engelhardt. He grew up on a farm with his eight brothers and two sisters. Harry attended country school along with his siblings and neighbor kids. He completed eight years of schooling and then stayed home to help out on the farm. Harry’s father died in the early 1940s, and Harry took the responsibility of helping his mother and his siblings on the family farm.
On Nov. 18, 1942 Harry married Sophia Brink in Wykoff, Minn. To this union two sons, Larry and Jeffrey, and one daughter, Cheryl were born.
Harry and Sophia farmed in the Chester, Iowa area as well as helping his mother with the home place. Along with farming, Harry drove school bus for the Howard-Winneshiek School District for over 20 years.
Harry always enjoyed music and taught himself how to play the harmonica, banjo and accordion. He did not read the music; he played everything by ear, knowing over 108 songs. Harry was a great caregiver. He took care of his wife for several years after she became homebound. He still continued to do everything they had always enjoyed to do. Harry did all the cooking, cleaning and laundry as well as tending a big vegetable and flower garden. He even canned all the vegetables that he grew. Harry enjoyed antique furniture and had refurbished many pieces. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed his community and being a member of the United Lutheran Church in Chester.
