Agnes Opal Rice was born February 14, 1921, at Swaledale, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur Charles and Ella Robertina (Trana) Polsdofer. She attended school in Swaledale, graduating from high school in 1939. On October 15, 1939, she and Virgil Rice were married at Swaledale. Together they farmed near Swaledale, Clear Lake, and Rockwell before moving to Lime Springs, Iowa in 1958. Virgil died in June of 2001. Agnes moved to the Cresco Care Center in December of 2004. She passed away in the Cresco Hospital on Thursday, September 8, 2011.
Agnes was an avid gardener, providing both beautiful flowers and much produce to feed her family. She was a 4-H leader for several years, an active member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She sang with the Cerro Gordo Farm Bureau Women’s Chorus and was active in the Republican Party. She loved playing many kinds of cards and board games. Her hobbies also included reading, baking, sewing and quilting. Her greatest joy was her family.
Agnes is survived by her children: Linda (Brittain) Lukens of McCordsville, Ind., Donna (Larry) Bonnstetter of West Bend, Iowa, Clair (Carol) Rice of Verndale, Minn., Dennis (Velma) Rice of Lime Springs and Betty (Dennis) VandeLaare of Mendota Heights, Minn.; 16 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Ardes Bier of Clear Lake, Iowa and Dorothy Hiscocks of Britt, Iowa; brothers, Duane (Joan) Polsdofer of Rockwell and B. Edward (Ethel) Polsdofer of Saline, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her parents; one brother, Lawrence; seven sisters, Marian, Mayvis, Avis, Neva, Elda, Leona, and Shari; and one great-granddaughter, Rachel Greenfield.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 12, at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Candraeah Carey officiating. Internment took place in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
